Keeping spare parts around

This weekend I got a rare chance to actually get out and practice some urban combat tacticals and had the most fun I’ve had in awhile.   A few months ago I did some practical handgun defensive shooting training, but I kind of lost the feel of recoil and that’s not something i like to feel when I’m on the range.   I have in the past pushed myself to practice shooting defensively from a cold mindset.   What do I mean?  Nobody warms up to a self defense situation, sometimes you are thrown into it.

Once you have your safe gun handling skills down, there’s nothing wrong with pushing yourself.   I recently got a reminder about checking things on a firearm before training though.  I carry lots of spare parts for my AR15 bolt, but I didn’t have a stock tool or spare detent pin and springs.  I watched a few gun dvds, specifially the AR15 Armorer’s course with Dean Caputo.  One good thing about having something like this is being able to identify the parts that go in certain areas and what they are used for.

The Art of the Dynamic Handgun

I’ve been really impressed with how well these Magpul DVD’s have been made.  I have been acquiring various firearm instruction DVD’s and most of them were well made, but I’m not picking up as much information as I would like to be getting for $40-$50.   The Magpul DVD’s are mostly 3-4 DVDs long and for that much information, it’s beyond worth the $40 or so that you will spend.   The Art of the Tactical Carbine Volumes I and II give you more than just the basics, they give you team communications and real fighting training.

I’m still hoping for the day when somebody like Pat Rogers does a DVD series.  I’ve been hoping to take a Carbine course from him but haven’t gotten the time to get out.   Shooting a good firearm instruction DVD means good training, and good production.  I’ve seen some pretty crappy production work, but the Magpul DVD series is very well done.   I’ve seen some really bad production where there were points you couldn’t hear the instructor talk or you got the same basic run down on how to load and unload the gun that you feel like you’re just learning basic NRA firearms instruction.

Firearm Instruction from a DVD

I remember that I use to walk around gun shows all the time and see some really out dated military training books and firearm training VHS tapes.   I skipped over these because they looked old, but eventually I ran into a few friends that owned some of them and I got to watch them.   I remember the first time I heard somebody run through firearm safety, and gun assembling and disassembling on a AR1 5 it was new to me.   One of my sponsored firearm instructors has a pile of DVD’s in his home collection that were all taken from his VHS collection.   Some of the best information about gun fights has been out there before and they are what most people call the fundamentals.   You can win a gun fight with a faulty firearm if you know how to deal with malfunctions.

If you want to get a well produced and highly informative instruction and don’t have the time to take a 2-3 day Carbine Course.   I am a big fan of the Mapgul DVD series.   I though the Aerial Platform DVD was the least interesting, but it’s also the least expensive.    The Art of the Tactical Carbine volumes I and II are outstanding and there is information on them that I have not see other places.  I have not watched another Carbine DVD series that comes close to be as informative about the M4 Carbine and team training.   The Art of the Dynamic handgun is a very well produced video for concealed carry and duty carry situations.

Magpul DVD review

I am almost all the way through the entire Magpul DVD collection.    After several years of being on the firing range as a student and an instructor, I have often been asked if I know about any good DVDs for training.   I started out watching The Art of the tactical Carbine Volume I over a year ago and finished off Volume II about 6 months ago.   I thought the volume of info and the length of the DVDs to be very well worth the amount of money I spent, I was really impressed with how much time there was.    I would recommend these DVDs to beginners even though I do not think they are novice level training.  There are some basics in this, but the application of advanced basics is in there.

The Magpul Aerial Platform DVD was in my opinion more for the History Channel than it was for the gun owner, but I would get this one last over the other three Volumes.     The Art of the dynamic handgun is by far the best bang for the buck.   Clint Smith has some very well produced DVDS but they were expensive and I thought they could have been more informative.   I give them to family members that are new to firearms, but the Magpul dvds were in my opinion a step up.   I haven’t been to Thunder Ranch, but I intend to do so some day due to it’s great reputation, but I think The folks at Magpul owe me some more defensive training DVDs.
