Best backup or self defense pepper spray?

That’s a hard answer to give because there are many variables in deploying pepper sprays but the best for the price that is easy to use and lasts a long time is the Kimber Pepper Blaster.  This design is much better than the previous guardian angel which felt more like a TV remove than a firearm.  I personally have demonstrated several of these for students and everyone thought they were very easy to use and a better option than bottle pepper sprays.    Everyone still comes in here to pick up the same old bottle pepper sprays and although these work well on sober attackers, overly aggressive men, they are not the fastest deploy.   Sure, if you train hard you can probable become more proficient but not everyone is going to have the time to do so.

There is a holster you can use with the Kimber Pepper Blaster but putting it in your pocket or a designated area of a purse is just fine.   It’s not like the Kimber Pepper Blaster is going to jam up on you from pocket lint.  There are no mechanical parts to move other than the trigger.  You get almost a 4yr lifetime out of these pepper blasters and they are very easy to toss in a your pants pocket.  The Tru Spec tactical pants and Woolrich Elite pants all have pockets that you can use that will fit these quite nicely.   I highly recommend these for gifts or for backups for personal protection.

Kimber Pepper Blaster 2 replaces Kimber Guardian Angel

ASP Pepper sprays and other less lethal options are great backup devices for concealed carry.  When it comes to CCW,  tactical knives can be used for self defense or every day carry and utility purposes. Tactical clothing designs vary in many ways and the ability to carry spare gun magazines in pockets and vests can be done, but it’s all about preference. Speed Loaders for the j-frame pocket carry make a nice backup. For more aggressive tactical purposes Blackhawk tactical gloves, Vickers tactical gloves give you a broad spectrum of applications.

For more tactical clothing and tactical apparel options, Woolrich Elite Series tactical shirts, tactical pants and tactical vests, we have a large selection depending on your preference of tactical clothing, the Kimber Pepper Blaster works well in either tactical pants like the Blackhawk lightweight tactical pants, Eotac tactical pants, light weight and CCW vests, Woolrich Elite Discreet Carry Twill Jacket, The Woolrich Elite Parka, and a large selection of tactical flashlight, gun holsters and magazine holders.

Kimber Pepper Blaster our number 1 selling less lethal device

I think we can honestly say as a retailer of tactical gear and firearm accessories that when we are asked about the various pepper sprays that we carry, that we’ve gotten 100% positive feedback about the new Kimber Pepper Blaster II.  I guess Kimber might have gotten sued over the Kimber Guardian Angel name or something because they changed it for some reason.  The Pepper Blaster II has been out for over a  year and this redesigned version is a big improvement.  The original version which was called the Kimber Guardian Angel had more of a TV remote control feel to it.   The design was not as securely held in your hand especially if you have smaller fingers.

If you want to avoid dealing with law enforcement for brandishing firearms carrying a less lethal device as a backup or secondary might be a good idea.  Some of these flash mob incidents wouldn’t look so good on the news if you started a shootout with unarmed individuals especially minors but the kimber pepper blaster II is a good 2 shot weapon that can be used on a bad guy to deter them from any bad behavior.  The best selling point about these besides the firearm looking grip and design is that these last for about 4yrs.   Knowing your $40 purchase won’t go to waste or loose energy in a year is a good thing.

Alternatives to carrying firearms

I’ve been watching the growing trend towards pocket guns and CCW weapons that I would defanitely consider to be minimal.    Years ago the debates were about which was better, 9mm or 45acp for stopping threats.   Now that so many first time CCW carriers are getting into the fold, but they seem to think that a .380 is good enough for them.   We have to balance between our skills as a CCW carrier and what is practical and what can be concealed.   Confronting a nut on PCP at close range may require an FAL in 7.62 NATO, but we may not be fortunate to have one.   In all honesty, there are just some situations where retreating and running full speed away is the best option.

Now that we have been becoming more and more aware of what actually “stops” a threat, we have to get into the realm of less-lethal weapons.   Tasers have been known to kill people, but they are more effective in stopping threats than firearms.   After seeing and reading about some pretty pathetic robberies and hold ups in the Trenton and Philadelphia area, I was wondering if someone just had a can of mace that the drug addict could have been taken down without putting several holes in the ceiling and walls of the stores.  The Kimber Pepper Blaster  is my favorite less lethal weapon  because it has a trigger and its easy to tell which direction it is pointing unlike bottle sprays.  2nd choice is followed by the ASP pepper sprays. I have nothing against people that just want to carry one gun, but I think a firearm, knife and less lethal weapon are my suggestions for CCW 7 days a week.

Backup weapon for primary purposes

The idea of having a backup weapon doesn’t necessarily mean that it is there for when your primary weapon goes down.    A secondary weapon can be there just because it’s in a different location and may be easier to access under a certain situation.   For instance, an ankle holster is  a great option for those that do a lot of driving.   Trying to retrieve a firearm while in the seated position with an IWB or paddle holster is going to be difficult, and try that under stress.   An firearm in an ankle holster is very easy to access unless you’ve got problems reaching your ankles in the first place.   A shoulder holster is also a good way of carrying if you do a lot of driving.

One thing to always think about though, is the modern improvements in pepper sprays.   The Kimber Pepper Blaster is a very easy device to carry due to its smooth surfaces and easy to feel grip.   Put a bottle in  your pocket that only shoots in one direction and when you try and grab it, it’ll take a lot of practice to know which direction the spraying end is pointing.   This is a non issue with the Kimber Pepper Blaster   Each end feels completely different and you will be able to feel which end points towards the bad guy even if its in your pocket.   The 2 shot Guardian Angel is easy for a novice to use.   The only bad thing about them is they are more expensive than most bottle mace, but the longevity of the product is 2xs longer than pepper sprays.

Fear of firearms

Kimber Guardian AngelI recently spoke to a friend who manages a gun shop.   We had a discussion about taking new shooters to the range and trying to break people in to not having a fear of having a firearm in their home.   I know of several family members who normally vote Democrat in National elections that all said that they thought about the fact that they did not have access to firearms if something like that ever ocurred in their hometown.    The idea of having extra food in the house before a snow storm isn’t paranoid, the idea of having smoke detectors in the home incase of fire is being paranoid, is having the ability to put out a fire in your house crazy when you can just let the fire company do it?   What about having some level of defense in  your home if some drunk shows up at your door at 2am or your husbands employee that was just fired wants to make an unexpected visit?

I never pressure people into owning firearms.   I always let that decision fall on the person buying a gun.   My job is to show them that having a firearm in their hands should be something that gives them confidence.   I’ve seen my share of CCW holders that I would not want to stand next to on a firing line due to poor firearm safety skills, so someone is going to have to put some time in to train with me before I tell them I think they are ready to carry one.   One thing I have heard several times recently is that somebody has a wife that says ” I will never have a gun in my home”.   I understand that, that is a mindset that probable can’t be negotiated with, but one thing I am not sympathetic to is any person with a family that does not have some defensive measures in place.   Guns are a lethal weapon that in untrained hands can be a hazard, and there are several other things that any Father or Mother should know are around to be used as weapons.    Kimber Guardian Angel, Tazers, Baseball bats, and last but not least, CO2 fire extinguishers can also be very effective.   If a women won’t consider having items like that around for self defense, I’m all for an annulment.

Kimber Guardian Angel sticker shock?

Kimber Guardian AngelIf you are looking to carry mace or pepper spray, I would absolutely have to urge you to do some research on the Kimber Guardian Angels also known as the Life Act.    At first you might get sticker shock, and I think you may want to consider buying 2 of them and test firing 1 of them before you really get comfortable carrying one.   I’ve earned my merit badges in seeing evil in the world I know walking around with the smallest pepper spray bottle to fend off a potential rapist, robber, or worse isn’t going to give you much of an edge.   There are many reasons to consider carrying a less lethal defensive measure.   You can blast someone with something like this without much of a worry about legal ramifications.   I’ve seen pepper spray used against 0bnoxious drunks which in my opinion were justified.

Why is the Kimber Guardian Angel a good choose over bottled pepper sprays?   I’m not sure if there is anything else as innovative as the Kimber Guardian, but if there is feel free to fill me in on it.   Bottled defensive measures have 2 flaws for the most part.   Number one is that you are going to have to figure out which end is the one to point it when in a hostile situation and the other is the shelf life of the product.   The Kimber is easy to point and you will know in micro seconds which end to point at  your attacker.   There is a safety mechanism that prevents accidental discharge which is something that does occur with the flip tabs that bottle sprays have.   The Kimber Guardian Angel will fit comfortable in most 5.11 Tactical, Woolrich Elite Series or Eotac front pockets.  The Kimber also has a shelf life of over 2yrs and if you are buying bottle mace every year, the Kimber costs you only $20 a year for 2yrs to help  you not get that $40 sticker shock.

Backup weapons

Kimber Guardian AngelAs we grow in our skills, we are more than likely to think about changing the firearms we carry.   I can’t tell you the number of times I hung out with a gun owner that looked like they could carry a full size 1911 in there front pocket, but choose to carry a J-frame instead.   Well, now that I’ve been carrying a firearm for close to 20yrs, I’ve really started to feel the weight especially when I was working overtime and carrying 10 and 12hrs days.   You really start to feel it at some point, the difference between 1lb and 3lbs of gun.    I guess there is almost a predictable learning curve when it comes to carrying guns.

I also know that many people choose to carry a secondary weapon.   Walking in and out of Police buildings,  I see guys that do investigations carrying 2 or 3 guns.   Sometimes certain environments are prone to very restrictive movements and sometimes having a gun in an ankle holster or shoulder holster along with your primary sidearm can mean the difference if there is a close quarters struggle.  That’s more common in the LEO world than in the civillian, but carrying a knife or mace is really my choose for CCW backup.  Take the Kimber Guardian Angel, this handy weapon lasts twice as long as bottle pepper spray, is easier to aim, and easy to put in a pocket.   The Elite Operator Tactical shorts in style 301 or style 302 can easily fit one of these in the front pockets that are outside of the hand pockets, this is a great thing to have when considering using non-lethal or less-lethal options when deadly force is not called for.
