Bitter cold, but wet weather CCW

Up here in the Northeast we are getting wacked with an early December.   I’ve been juggling between heavy winter coats and an Eotac 501 half zip sweat shirt.    I have found that wearing a good base layer, T-shirt and a sweat shirt of some sort, usually is good enough to get me through the day.   If I have to worry about covering my head and it’s below 30F I always take my Han Solo Hoth winter jacket.    It works for it’s intended purpose, but I personally don’t like wearing heavy jackets in the winter and carrying a firearm.   The heavy winter jackets don’t breath very well and there have been multiple times I have done my Christmas shopping in this configuration and was dying from the heat once I was in a shopping mall for more than an hour.

I have notice there has been some turmoil with Woolrich Elite products but they came out with several new products this past year that impressed me.  The most impressive item I saw was the Woolrich Elite Parka.   This was one of our number one selling Christmas items and they did a good job designing it.   This Parka is a Waterproof layer you can wear over your clothing and it will breath better than a heavy winter jacket that is water proof.   I don’t like the idea of carrying firearms in out wear, but I can carry my flashlight and spare magazines when I’m wearing this.   In Fall or Spring weather this jacket can be folded up into a glove compartment and be used for those Fall or Spring showers that come out of no where.

Woolrich concealed carry shirts

When we go out to our favorite clothing stores to shop for CCW friendly clothing one of the most important things we will most likely be choosing is a good gun belt.  Gun belts are often over looked because people think that all they need to do is clip it on and it that works, everything is fine.   If you are not carrying that often, that may cut it for you, but I have ruined plenty of belts before I picked up a Wilderness instructor belt.   The first time I used this belt I was carrying a 1911 and was amazed at how well the belt supported the firearm.  After close to 3 yrs the only that has really started to wear out was the velcro, and I have gone through 2 kydex holsters that broke in the same time period.

Woolrich has made a lot of fine clothing for hunting and civillian purposes,  but only recently have they really come up with something different for real concealed carry.   We’re still waiting for some of the big tactical clothing companies to catch up on the CCW shirt market because all we seem to really see are tactical pants and tactical shirts.   What we really want to see is regual clothing that is cut to the right lengths and fits us as comfortable as if we weren’t carrying a firearm.   Carrying a gun always some level of adaptation, but a good gun belt and Woolrich Elite concealed carry shirts should give you a lot of flexibility

From Summer to Fall and quickly to winter

Up here in the Northeast we never know what kind of morning we are going to wake up to.   This is usually the time of year that I see so many friends and family membes get sick because they leave the house in the morning and jump in their car and hope the cars warms up fast enough to make up for the fact that they were too lazy to put on a coat.   By the time the afternoon rolls around it’s 75F and the jacket or sweatshirt is too hot to wear.   If you are concealing a firearm, you have to think about the possibility of having to take a layer of clothing off during the day without having to take your gun off.   This is one reason I really don’t think about carrying a firearm in a coat, because rarely does one wear a coat all day long.

The Eotac Style 501 half zip sweatshirt is something to consider for cold mornings, but it will make you hot if the weather warms up, from my experience a vest is more appropriate at this time of year because it gives you some level of warmth, but also can be opened up or unzipped.   The Eotac Style 103 concealed carry vests are very comfortable for OWB or paddle holster.   The long length will keep your firearm concealed even while moving.   The front pockets can easily hold and support your spare mags without feeling like you have lead weights pulling on you.  I can tolerate a Sig 229 in 40 S&W and comfortable carry 3 12rd magazines in the forward front pockets.

Concealment vests from an LEO perspective

I think the ultimate concealed carry vest that doesn’t make you look like you are carrying a firearm is more likely going to be something like a cloaking device seen in Star Trek.   Some of the conversations I’ve heard at conventions, gun shows and on the phone with people are somewhat comical.   I’ve seen under agents show up drug busts that I could spot ahead of time, just because they had nice cars and tinted windows.   The funny thing is the idiot drug dealers didn’t even see it coming. I think the proper mindset is don’t volunteer information, pay attention to your surroundings and be sneaky.

There are many levels of vests for the gun owner, some are going to be snapped on, locked down, and pulled tight.   Others go over your arms and just hang there.  The Eotac Styles 102 and Style 103 vests are go for street work because they don’t stand out as much like an assault vest, but they still have a lot of practical applications.   Both vests will hang below the belt line and will give you full coverage for carrying a paddle holster or OWB holster.  We still get more than a few phone calls every year asking if we have jackets or concealed carry vests for retaining firearms like a 1911.   While I strongly disagree with carrying primary firearms inside jackets and vests, it’s a personal choice and if it works for you then it’s good for your applications.

Eotac Field Jacket #1

Eotac field jacketThe jacket may look heavier than it really is.   I would suggest that you wear this in the Fall or Spring and use it as a surface layer and just add on base layer clothing is the temperatures get colder.   We are discounting the Lizard patter jackets and the lizard patter Field Vest which also has similiar pocket designs.   We have had virtually zero complaints about the fit of this jacket as long as the user reads our sizing guide and measure themselves properly.  You will easily be able to carry fully loaded double stack magazines as well as flashlights and knives comfortable and not have to worry about printing.  You will be able to carry small autos or j-frame guns in the outer pockets but I am not really a fan of carrying guns in coats, jackets or vests.

We have been selling a few brands of tactical clothing that from the pictures you see on  our website, may look like they are the same thing.   The reality is much of what you saw from Woolrich Elite over the years was marketed and designed by the people behind Eotac.   While we let our customers debate over which products they prefer, the item we are selling now that we absolutely have an opinion about and aren’t afraid to say it is the new Eotac Field Jacket.   This field jacket is designed for modern gear and is based off of the Algerian jacket that was issued in the 1950s.  The fit and design of the pockets is superior to any simliar jacket and according to our customers this is the better jacket.   The only complaint we have gotten on the jacket is that it doesn’t hang low over the belt line so you will have to take that into consideration when thinking about CCW options.

Military Jacket for the modern CCW carrier

Tactical JacketWe we get into discussions with people that are looking for clothing that doesn’t make them look like they are carrying a gun, we listen to what the customer has to say and then we give them some options.   We realize that dressing all tactical and clipping a folding knife onto a front pocket is usually a giveaway, but there is more to think about other than “what if they think I look like I carry a gun”.    Well, how many times have you seen an Obama hippy pot smoking hippy with a camoflauge jacket on or cutoff camo pants?   Does he look like he’s easy prey for a robber?
If you are working the narcotics department and you don’t want to look like a cop or that you just walked out of boot camp, we understand, but being situationally aware is far more importantant than worrying about what other people think of you.     The Eotac Style 502 Field Jacket is a modernized CCW tactical jacket that has that vintage look, especially if you go for that lizard patter camo.   The pockets are designed for carrying modern flashlights, phones, knives ect and won’t be as clumsy to use compared to military surplus jackets.   Check out the Style 103 Field vest also that is basically the same desing, but without sleeves.    One thing you have to remember about this jacket though is it is a jacket and not a coat, it is also not a firearms retention device and not meant to carry a large gun in the pockets.   We do get customers that order these and seem to think that because it is a CCW style jacket that it means you can put a gun in it.   We’d recommend worrying about a different holster design than trying to conceal a firearm in this.

Winter Jackets and carrying gear

Tactical JacketsI’ve gotten the questions numerous times about what kind of jacket is best for winter carry.   I’m not one to suggest that carrying a firearm in an outwear jacket is a good idea.   There are expensive jackets out there where you can carry a gun and retain it in the jacket, but weight distribution is almost always an issue.  Sometimes people need to realize that winter carry isn’t going to be as easy as summer carry because cold environments are going to mean big jackets or multiple layers of clothing.

One new option that may help you in your search for a spring/fall/winter carry option is the new Eotac Field Jacket, this is a very military looking jackets, but has a tactical jacket look that is a great thing to wear over layers of winter clothing.   The Eotac Field Jacket is not a very heavy jacket even though it may look like it.   The Field Jacket has multiple pockets for knives, flashlights, cell phones, pepper spray and spare magazines.   The field jacket does not hang very lowe on the waiste so it  may not be good for some ways of carrying, but even if this jacekt is zipped up, the front of the jacket is cut in a manor where reaching under and retrieving a firearm from a should holster or belt holster is not that difficult.

Military style jacket adapted to modern times

Eotac Field JacketI’ve seen a few military style jackets at Army Navy type stores, but most wearers are using them just for the look, but not because they really use it for any practical purpose.   There are some military style jackets that have good outdoor applications, but recently the very innovative and emerging tactical apparel company called Eotac, has developed something new.   The Eotac 502 Field Jackets is far superior to the Woolrich Elite Algerian jacket that has been on the market for a few years.   Both jackets are based on the Algerian style military jacket issued in the 1950’s.

The Eotac field Jackets has snap on pocket encosures and not velcro or as some like to call it, hook and loop.   I never thought this was much a thing to worry about, but several of our military and law enforcement customers have informed us that velcro wears out and is also very loud.   We didn’t thik about that, but the developers of the Eotac line obviously did.  The Field Jacket arm length is also properly designed.   All of us are build differently and not every shirt or jacket is going to work for everyone just because we have the same chest measurements, but we feel the Elite Operator Tactical Field Jacket is much better designed.  The 501 is also available in the Lizard Patter Camo that many of the original Algerian jackets came in.  The zippered sleeve pocket on the Field Jacket has a pen pocket and can hold something as large as a note pad or blackberry.  You will be able to carry just about any configuration of magazines, flashlights, knives, pepper spray ect. once you get use to all of the pockets, just be careful you don’t loose your gear in this jacket because there are so many places to put your stuff.
