A common issue when ordering clothing online

Tru-Spec shirtsWe get probable 3-5 customers a day calling us on the phone and asking about the clothing we sell and how it will fit them.   We have various sizing charts but they are different for each brand that we sell.   I wear a large part of the clothing we sell, and I see big differences between the fit even if my sizes are all the same.   I always like the Woolrich Elite line but the fit of the shirts was a little off  for my body type with the shoulder lengths.    We tested out some of the 5.11 tactical shirts and the 5.11 t-shirts which many of our Police Officers know and wear but we are very picky about what we stock because we don’t sell clothing to just weekend warriors we sell clothing to people that  aren’t going to want to deal with discomfort if they don’t have to because they all know that body armor is almost always something they want to get off as soon they are back in the Office and no longer out on deployment.

In regards to the entire Tru-Spec product line, there are differences in the fit of the various uniform and 24/7 Series shirts.   Some people in this industry need to have their Tru-Spec shirts tucked in and have a tighter fit on the shoulder while others may have a more relaxed style like the 24/7 Polos, the tactical polos and the performance polos are very well received and I personally  have not had any shrinkage problems.    The Polyester cotton rip stop shirts are lightweight and ultra lightweight designs and you really may want to take a trip to our tactical store to really  understand how they will feel and fit you.   Everyone’s torso and arm lengths can vary and if you don’t know already, you’ll want to do a walk through before you buy  online and have to deal with returns or exchanges  with online purchases.

IDPA competition shooters, where to start? We’ll tell ya!

Blackhawk Serpa HolstersJust had another local guy that was getting into shooting IDPA and was not sure where to start from.  We have been getting a lot of customers walking in here trying to figure out what the best holster was for them to get and we always start with the Fobus gun holsters.  Paddle holsters are easy to get on and off and Fobus makes a good product for in the $25 price range.  They are very good for open carry or winter carry.  When it’s time to pick out magazine pouches, we offer nylon, open kydex mag pouches and the Blackhawk single and double stack magazine pouches.  I personally like the Blackhawk open magazine pouches because they have a little bit of tention that keeps the magazines from rattling or coming out under certain levels of shaking.   I always warn people about open magazine pouches because sometimes people do lose gear when moving.

You definitely are not going to want any type of holster with level 2 retention but there is nothing wrong with the Fobus E2 type holsters because you can adjust the tension to your tolerance levels.  The Blackhawk Serpa holsters are more popular with law enforcement and it’s not safe for them to carry guns out in the open without level 2.  Lots of Police Officers get hurt on the job just from scuffles and it gives a little more comfort knowing that in a scuffle the gun is not going to come loose.  Most of the differences between Safariland ALS and the Blackhawk Serpa is about preferences, but they are all very popular with Glock owners.

Compact sights that get the job done

eotech sights After you gain experience in Law Enforcement you realize that hits matter more than MOA groups.   I’ve been through so much training and had so much range experience that having an accurate rifle does not mean you are going to win a fight.  There are plenty of bad guys that can’t shoot for shit and they still can kill special forces guys if they spray enough gun fire at them.   Ricochet bullets can kill and even body amour mentions on the trama plates that they can cause ricochets so you know bullets don’t always fly straight.  The trend in recent years has been towards red dots and even though Trijicon, Aimpoint and Eotechs have been around for a long time, there are a lot of variations between all of them.  Many of our customers ask for advice but it’s really about what you want to see and  how you use them.

I personally have a strong preference toward Eotech sights and I’m a big fan of the Eotech EXPS2-0 sight.  I have been using Eotech sights for almost 8yrs and only had one battery issue, but wear and tear has to be expected and most of the big name companies have good warranties so you can send them  in for repairs.  My eyes still pickup the Eotech gun sight better than a red dot because red dots always seem to chase the targets to me.   The Eotech sights do have variations in reticles and for longer range engagements you may want the circle with the 2 dot system.  I am a big fan of the Eotech magnifiers.

Tru-Spec product line overview- Tactical Shirt options

truspec shirtsI have been very new to the Tru-Spec product line since I have so many shirts from the Woolrich Elite Series Tactical and the Eotac product lines.   Most of the shirts are still in very good condition.   When we moved on from that Era of tactical clothing, we dealt with far more of the polyester styles of clothing, at first most of these felt too hard and not as soft, but I’ve been won over to adding the Tru-Spec ultra-lightweight tactical shirts to my personal inventory.   I got around to testing out these items right at the tail end of the summer and I was very happy with them.  Having the proper venting is a must and next time the weather warms up I will also be testing out and  posting reviews about the Blackhawk Warrior wear.  Gusseted arms and venting are things that are going to be about how well it matches up to your body type.  The best thing about the Tru-Spec product line is they really give us a good option for people accustomed to the 5.11 product line.

The stiffer feel of the Tru-Spec polyester/cotton rip stop material seems to be more fitting for those in uniform and are fell less maintenance than some of the 100% cotton ripstop.   Having a material that doesn’t shrink, fade or fall apart is not that common and the TruSpec shirts we sell have a very high approval rating in this regard.   Their selection of performance polos and different fitting cotton polos have large selection of color options as well as long and short sleeve.   Many of our local departments have switched over to the Tru-Spec 24.7 Series polos and now that Tru-Spec has started doing silk screening and embroidering it’s really helped us to grow our business.

Sticking with Factory magazines for all of my handguns!

Glock 26 magazines in stockI started out with 1911s and they are probable the only magazines I would not buy factory magazines for.  As a matter of fact, I don’t  even know who I would say made factory magazines for the 1911?  Colt ?  Maybe but I don’t find Colt magazines to be as sturdy and Chip McCormick mags or Wilson Combat.  The strength of gun magazine springs and “you get what you pay for” really comes into play with this type of firearm.  I have a Beretta 92FS that I had a lot of fun with back in the 1990’s when the assault weapon ban was going on and this was just about the only firearm I could get magazines for at a reasonable price.  Back then some Glock magazines were going for $90 a magazine and after buying 3 or 4 of them you basically purchased a new firearm.

I have learned to maintain my firearms properly and magazine and spring replacement is as important as cleaning  your firearms, you just don’t have to do it as much.  I have heard stories of guys in the military that still had to clean out the magazines on their guns, something like the Glock 26 magazines in stock that are smaller and I’d probable say is a compact firearm, need to be cleaned probable every 5000rds or so because after that much usage, you really don’t know what else might have flown into your magazine.  There is a reason magpul makes dust covers for their guns  and in harsh environments I don’t think people realize that dirty magazines cause as much malfunctioning as dirty guns.
