I recently did a walk through at a Dick’s Sporting goods store and I was recently at a Cabela’s here in Pennsylvania. The gun cleaning kits that I had when I first got my own rifle are still being made, but I just don’t have the urge to give something like that as a Holiday present to family members. I’m not sure exactly what is going on, but I have so many family members getting their first firearms and it’s been a lot of fun getting them setup with targets, joining gun clubs and helping them take apart and clean the guns. It’s also been a learning experience because I didn’t know how to do everything until I did a little research.
I still highly recommend that people have atleast one strong one piece cleaning rod for a rifle or handgun around, but that is only for clearing any bore obstructions. Boresnakes are the easiest thing for a new shooter to use because not everyone has young eyesight and can see clearly inside the gun to know that everything has been cleaned. For anyone getting an AR15 or knowing someone getting an AR, the Otis gun cleaning kits are probable the best gift you can give them. Make sure you get the M16 kit because it has special brushes and tools to get into areas that a cleaning rod just won’t touch.
When I stopped and thought about writing this, I couldn’t believe how many years it has been since the AWB has expired. It feels like it was just yesterday that I could get Glock or Sig Sauer magazines without having to spend $60-$90 for them. Factory magazines are still more expensive than some of the other magazines out there, but they are always the best option for handguns. There are plenty of decent manufacturers for AK or AR15 rifles, and most problems I have seen with AK mags can be fixed with a simple file to the tab on the mag wells. I recently picked up a couple Glocks and XD handguns because I wanted to bring something to the next class I teach that wasn’t a Beretta, Sig Sauer or 1911. Some people just have issues shooting 45acp and I didn’t own anything other than a Sig 220 and a 1911.
I have found the Springfield Armory XD 45acp to be the most comfortable 45acp gun to shoot that was not a steel gun. I find the Glock 21 to be too bulky especially for my female students. The factory gun magazines for my Glocks are less expensive than Sig Factory magazines, but I have never had to replace anything on my Sigs other the springs. Wolff Gun springs work very well in all of my rifle and pistols and I have stockpiles of them so that if I notice any slowness in cycling, I can just swap them out. Rotating your gun magazines is a good way of making sure you don’t wear out the same magazine, because it’s a pain in the neck when you are trying to determine if the magazine is bad or if a shooter is limp wristing a firearm during a training session.
There are a great many things that I have learned over the years about what is a combat worthy firearm and what is a hobby type of firearm. I have seen such huge variations in AR 15 rifles that I really can’t say that some manufacturers of direct impingement firearms are less reliable that gas piston guns. There are some variations in the older design that have machine their parts so well that they really do run on less lubrication and have run in some tests off thousands and thousands of rounds with out failure. I will say that gas piston guns will run cleaner, but are they more reliable than a high end AR15? I don’t think most of us will really ever know the answer to that because there are always variables in how a firearm is maintained and in what climate and conditions it is subjected to.
If I had to issue handguns and rifles to relatives, I’d probable go with a gun that is easy to clean and easy to shoot, if I want a gun for myself, I’ll take the guns that work the best for me. I know I put more effort into making sure every rifle I own has the right parts staked and loctited down. I have broken a few Tasco and Simmons optics, but I have never had Leupold rifle scopes, Zeiss or Trijicon optic fail on me. There are faulty mounts and scope rings out there, but even the less expensive ones will work if you use Loctite on them and don’t over torque them. Over torque screws on firearms can mean broken screws and I have learned that the hard way with a DSArms SA58. The FAL is not a very good gun for using optics, but it can work if you lock everything into place. Cleaning the guns with this scope mounts is difficult, but the FAL can be made into a good DMR gun.
I would have to say that the vast majority of those that have anything more than a flashlight and optic on the M4 are probable putting something on our guns that we really don’t need, but just enjoy having on. There’s nothing wrong with having an LWRCI upper with a quad rail or a MidWest quad rail if you think you can put it to use, but when we actually have to carry the Carbine for any real length of time, we’ll wish we could strip a few extra pounds of weight off the gun. Many of our Staff have been attending competition shoots lately that have been really well run. These events are everything from battle scenarios or even Zombie shoots.
Last year in Pennsylvania we attended a Carbine shoot where the the attendees has to sign in at 8am and once they left the club house, they couldn’t drop off any gear and had to lug it all with them for the day. All of the competitors were carrying M4 or AR15 variants and a few had AK rifles. Ammunition loads were approximately 400rds of rifle and 100rds of handgun ammo. I enjoy these events because we get too see some real hard use of tactical gear and tactical accessories. We tend to not see things fail at these shoots because the competitors are in the higher class as far as skill and the types of firearms they use. If you ever want to see what kind of optics work and which firearms and when things jam, go to a competition shoot at your gun club and sit back and watch.
This past weekend I got to take my 1911 collection to the range along with a friend and family member that all brought their 1911 handguns. The real test I wanted to conduct is to see which magazines would all fall free from the guns when the magazine release was pressed and how reliable the guns were. It still amazes me that the number of people with AR15 rifle or 1911 handguns that are not using the best on the market with their guns, even though they carry them or use them for self defense. I have strongly felt that Magpul P-mags should replace every GI magazine in your inventory and I’m waiting to see if anyone comes out with handgun magazines as durable. I believe it is coming.
Wilson Combat magazines have been my favorite every since my first and only bad reliability range day with my Colt 1991A1. The second range trip with my Colt wasn’t very good because I had the same issue with the gun closing on an empty chamber. In a defensive situation, this is as bad as the gun stove piping. You will still have to manually cycle the gun to load it and you will even have to change the magazine out. Get Wilson Combat magazines and avoid the problem and toss your USGI magazines or move them to plinking malfunction drill range trips. Chip McCormick magazines are a close second place for me, but Wilson Combat has a good selection of gun accessories for your 1911 if you want to take a look.
I feel sorry for some of the people that are gun owners and are presently stepping into the word of AR15, AK or Mini 14 ownership for the first time and live in anti-gun States. I have had some really bizarre conversations with friends in California and New Jersey that had to take AR15 or FAL gun magazines and have blocks welded into them so they couldn’t take more than 10rds. To some people these sounds like a good thing, but the real problem is you are taking something that is functional at a certain operating system and potentially messing the whole thing up. Magazine capacity restrictions are like putting smaller gas tanks on cars to keep people from speeding. The other problems that many in New Jersey or California and other States run into are gun accessories like flash hiders or folding stocks, these are all usually banned.
I find the whole issue about bans on gun accessories like bayonets and folding stocks to basically be about people trying to put band aids on your kids body parts where there is no bleeding expecting to stop another person from beating him or her up. Nobody wants to talk about how most gun crime is from the drug trade which basically is a self inflicted problem due to our Federal Government getting involved. Gun accessories like, bayonets, flash hiders, folding stocks, collapsing rifle stocks have no bearing on reducing crime and putting people who are a threat to society in jail for long periods of time would have more impact on reducing crime than making law abiding citizens block 20rd magazines so they can only hold 10.
I was fortunate to attend a sniper competition a few years ago where I must have learned more about combat than every before. About 40 students were attending this training competition even and given the rules for attending the match. Everyone was told to arrive with unloaded firearms, but to keep all of their gear in the cars and attend a safety briefing. Well, one of the best events for this competition/training even occurred in the first 30 seconds after the safety briefing. Everyone was asked if they understood all of the safety rules and when everyone said yes, it began. The Instructor explained the first stage of the shooting event. Everyone was told to grab their gear from their car and immediately return to the firing line, unload the gear and engage the targets. The attendees gave us a big smile while the students/competitors did an “Oh, Shit!”
I sat and watched every student run back to their car which was about 15-30yds behind the firing line, I noticed varying types of rifle cases and rifle bags, some shooters showed up with loaded magazines and others had to manually load the guns, as soon as they were ready to shoot, they engaged the targets. I believe they had 6 minutes to take down all of the targets from 100-200yds. The variations in time to engage the enemy targets varied by several minutes. Anyone that had a M4 Carbine or 30rd magazine that didn’t have loaded gun magazines or didn’t have a speed loader, was the last to engage the targets. I saw only 2 people out of 40 engage the targets in the first 5 minutes. Maglula speed loaders are must for anyone serious about using a carbine for self defense, unless you have the military style loaders.
It was only a few years ago that I thought that I needed to schedule some time with a Glock certified gunsmith so I didn’t have to sit and read a book about assembling and disassembling a G26 which is always a royal pain. Even though guns are fairly simple, there are always little tricks to holding a gun and knowing how to wiggle difficult parts out, no matter how many times I’ve read my directions for installing computer software or putting my damn kids legos together, a good old instruction video is better. I was really happy to see that Otis sends out CD and DVD instructions with their cleaning kits which probable saves there customer service department a lot of headache phone calls.
I have a few AGI gun videos I strongly suggest picking them up, but now in the age of youtube.com it’s easy to find someone who has posted there own instructional videos and I have found some really good ones. Please be aware that I am not saying that youtube is a great source for valid info because I have seen plenty of poor gun handling skills which I wish would be removed, but as much as there are some bad points about the internet, there are plenty of good ones. Installing gun parts and accessories if done incorrectly may mean damaging or breaking your gun or the part you are trying to install. I know a few gun shops that limit the amount of gun accessories that they carry because they are tired of the complaints about how the gun parts were broken when they got them.
I’m sure there are plenty of guys out there, or ladies that have a lot of military experience and got to shoot some neat stuff. Comparing the Ruger 10/22 to being in fire control on an AC130 Spectre gun ship is comparing apples to oranges. I will say that I have shot a lot of semi-auto military style weapons and although I have fun shooting them, bringing a wife or friend that lacks the experience or has a fear of recoil can limit the types of firearms you are using. The first Ruger 10/22 I owned had a pretty long break in period. I had a lot of issues getting it to reliable cycle, but I had a lot of friends that gave me advice on how to tweak these firearms and having a reliable break in period was normal.
A friend suggested that I just fire a lot of ammo through it and eventually it will break in. Anothe friend said to use some hot ammo like 22lr stingers and it will speed up the process. I tried both of these, but after about 500rds, I still was annoyed at how many jams I had, I thought it was the gun magazines, but we’ll soon find out. My other friend suggested I take the gun appart and try to polish it with nylon pads, very similar to what you use to clean dishes. I took his advice and spent about 15 minutes polishing the gun, I used a little CLP inside and took it out for another range trip. I tried shooting some cheap Remington 22LR ammo and the gun functioned almost 100% of the time. I was probable getting a failure to fire less than every 300rds which for a 22LR rifle, that is not that bad.
Hogue grips are molded from a synthetic rubber that will help you keep your grip during rapid fire or slow fire engagements. There are other options for replacing your factory grips on semi-autos and revolvers. Remember that it is normal to have to customize a firearms grips because all of us are not the same, and one way to improve our accuracy, and shooting skills is to customize a firearm to our particular tastes. You may want to think about this the next time you go to a gun shop and check out the same model firearm, but with different grips.
Some firearm manufacturers have caught on to this and are now selling the handguns with removable backstraps which will adjust the distance the trigger is from your hand. Glocks are being sold this was as well as the M&P line of pistols. I have a lot of friends that have put packmayr pistol grips on there Glocks long before Glock caught on. As firearms evolve so will the accessories adjustability. Decal gun grips are a simple answer to having a better hold on older model Glocks.
