Spring and Summer holsters, time to ditch the leather?

That is something that I had to learn the hard way after I damaged several of my Sig Sauer pistols with using leather holsters in the summer that caused the inner side of the gun to rust.   I don’t know why Sigs aren’t made with a better finish, but I have learned to switch to Glocks in hot weather just because I know the guns won’t rust.   It’s taken me awhile to get use to them, but the higher capacity and a couple ounces lighter of a gun actually makes life easier in the Summer heat.  Kydex holsters are pretty much the standard now because re holstering is also easy  under stress.

I really do like the Don Hume holsters, Galco and especially the Desantis holster line.   There are big differences in the cost of these leather holsters and the Desantis holsters are somewhat pricey but they really do look good and have a very nice finish.   One thing that I did not like about some of the IWB holsters that are leather is they do start to flop with age and re-holstering under stress is something that can be a problem.  The IWB tuck-n-go holsters are difficult to re-holster. I actually suggest taking the holsters off for safety sake.

Elite Survival Patrol bags in stock

We got in some of the Elite Survival Systems Patrol bags because we had a recent hiring of local Police and several of them were looking for products and gear that they could use on their new jobs.  Being located where we are, there are a lot of demands for quick pickups of gear whenever it’s needed and that is something we here more and more.  Many retail shops don’t like to stock items because they don’t want the overhead and just want to make the sales when they can.  Well, you know that is one reason why online purchases have gone up because it’s just as easy to go home log on to your computer and have an item shipped to your home in a couple days.

The Elite Survival Patrol Bag is something that a Law Enforcement officer is going to want to have with him to move his stuff back and forth.  The re-enforced liner/ divider for sturdiness.  These Elite Survival bags are very well thought out and have been modified for specific missions that Law Enforcement might have.  These are not range bags for a gun guy that just needs pocket dividers for handguns and shooting accessories, these are designed for holding flashlight and citation books.

Search gloves from Turtleskin

I do not have much experience with needing to use search gloves, but the liabilities of not using search gloves like the Turtlskin gloves are life altering.  Years ago I remember seeing a few fundraisers for emergency response individuals that all got Hepatitis C while working on the job.   You can spend your life trying to save other people’s lives and then find out you just shortened your life because you were exposed to the scum element of society and got HIV or Hepatitis C from a needle user because you got stabbed by a needle.

Blood splatter can occur just from someone spitting on you and that is one reason even the clear eyewear we sell from Smith Optics Elite is so popular.  It’s  not just about sunlight getting in  your eyes, but products like the Turtleskin gloves like the Bravo and Alpha gloves are what you are going to want to stow in your car if you are dealing with this type of environment.   Skipping this step can be easier but all you have to do is look at all of the beef and beer fundraisers for so many in the emergency response community and you’ll see why protective gear is so important.

Clearing Malfunctions on an AR may mean finding out how good your stock is

I found out the hard way while taking a newby to the firing range and teaching them how to clear malfunctions from an AR15 if they couldn’t get the bolt back.   When I showed them how to clear the malfunction, they told me they were afraid to hit it hard on the ground because they thought they might break the stock, I told them to just got ahead and hit it hard enough to have the bolt fly back and they did.   When I checked the stock to make an adjustment on it, I found out that the stock was broken and I could not shorten it.  This was an AR15 that I built myself and very much consider it to be a hobby rifle, but I will not be putting hobby gun parts on it in the future.

I have no reason to deviate from using anything but the best for my AR15 hunger, the gun parts I have on my M4 rifles are what I like and it took me a long time to get to this point.   There are several choices to make for your magpul accessories and the most popular CTR stock is hands down my favorite.  I like the way the stocks lock   into place and they feel very sturdy.  I have done slam down malfunction clearances and never even cracked the stock.  I expect at some point it may break, but I’ve already got my monies worth.

Finding a gun case for your expensive Carbine

It always bothered me that guys would call off going to the range with me when there was the slightest chance of rain coming down because they didn’t want their gun to get wet.   It’s funny that someone would spend $2000 to get a combat worth rifle and then be afraid they might damage it if it gets rained on.  Most modern firearms can handle the rain and you better get use to the fact that rain isn’t going to ruin it.  If you had a wood stock on your rifle that might be another issue, but people can be far too protective of firearms when real operators know that firearm parts wear out.  Guns get scratched and things come loose and anyone that is that concerned about it probable doesn’t really have a spike in a fight anyway.

One thing that I don’t have a problem with is people getting good gun cases and protecting their guns and gear in storage.  Sometimes rifle optics can double the value of your guns, and some people upgrade their guns with new AR15 complete upper receivers that can further increase the value of a firearm.  Guns, especially M4 Carbines should be rugged and tough and getting good Magpul Accessories on it and tightening them with loctite is a way to prevent problems.   There are some really nice gun cases from Elite Survival Systems like the Covert Operations gun case that has velcro straps for locking down your optics and firearm securely.

More news from the training world

Yet another firearms instructor that I have a good relationship with has banned the use of the Blackhawk Serpa from his course.   I will make myself very clear before anyone things I am going to go off on a tangent and say that the Blackhawk Serpa Sucks and is a piece of shit and should not be ever made.   So here me straight, some firearms accessories and gear need more training to use properly and many novice gun owners and ill-trained Law Enforcement are more  likely to have an accident with them than with other gear.  When it comes to firearms, yes, I have known of more negligent discharges with Glocks than with any double action firearm, am I going to bash Glocks? No, I will not.

I do not have combat experience with a gun holster but I have had extensive experience in dealing with the bad elements of society and understand what stress is.  There has been much to say about the designs of retention holsters under stress and the Safariland holsters are the best holster according to what we have seen and heard.   Blade Tech seems to also have a good reputation but in all honesty i’ve never head one in my hands so I couldn’t say.  The 5.11 thumbdrive holsters are another retention holster that has very limited testing experience so I guess we have to resort to the tried and true.

Elite Survival Systems quality tactical nylon gear

We had to pick a gun case and gun bag company that we knew made quality stuff and after seeing all of the Blackhawk gun bags, 5.11 range bags and the Bulldog gun cases.   There is a really big difference in the material and the quality of the Elite Survival Systems tactical nylon.   Gun bags are a hard thing to buy online and it’s up to the manufacturers to supply us with good images of what the bags and compartments are for and that is something we’re glad Elite Survival is doing.  Every person that needs a range bag, EMS bag or Patrol bag may have different needs but the features and designs have been a hit with our customers.

When it comes to stocking products that are in demand in this day and age, products line belly bands are hard to sell online because getting the right fight is a guessing game online.   The Core Defender gun holsters from Elite Survival Systems is something you will want to stop in a store and try out.   I consider myself to be above average height and ended up being a Medium for this bellyband.   I would have guess a large or an X-large at first, but that is the hard thing about shopping online.

TruSpec 24/7 tactical pants promo in full swing

April 1st we began our venture into new territory with the TruSpec 24/7 series of tactical clothing.  When we scanned around and looked into what tactical clothing companies looked viable in this bad economy, it took us just a few quick moments to see that TruSpec has a good grip on marketing their products and the diversity of the product line gave us an open door into a new market.   The TruSpec 24/7 tactical pants are very different in design than the 5.11 tactical pants that so many have pretty much copied.  Trying to discern the difference between them from a few feed away is hard.

The poly cotton ripstop material gives more resistance to stains and also almost no need to have to iron your pants.  This may be a non-issue for some people but for others the tru spec 24 7 tactical pants that we are carrying are a much better quality and fit than the 5.11 counter parts.  5.11 has turned into such a giant that selling watches and flashlights has exceeded it’s desire to sell quality clothing.   When it comes to oursourcing manufacturers of clothing 5.11 makes a mess for itself by out sourcing to 3 different Countries.  TruSpec owns their own factories and has a very consistent fit.

Something new and interesting from Desantis

We had a special order for a product that we don’t normally carry called the Desantis Rail Ryder.   When we get requests for products that we don’t stock we usually evaluated the product first, ask the customer why they want it and usually ask them to give us a review after that have used it for awhile.  When we first saw the images for the Desantis Rail Ryder we didn’t understand what it was all about but after playing around with it for a few minutes we got it.   This is a HD holster that you can quickly put on if you had to go around your house.

One reason I have often suggested IWB holsters that are made out of kydex is because you have to be realistic, if you are ever in a gun fight, you will want to be able to reholster the gun with ease and possible under stress and leather holsters tend to collapse or fold in on themselves.   This is a very unique product from Desantis holsters that is very practical.   There is no real way to holster a firearm without having a holster on already if you had to get up in the middle of the night.   You could quickly move about your house and if need be the gun is already to be attached to a belt.

A good holster that protects and retains a firearms

There has been so much bad mouthing of the Blackhawk Serpa holsters, but there seems to be some sense getting to people’s heads that its now becoming an accepted reality.   There is always a certain amount of training one most achieve before they carry a firearm. There are plenty of things that one can avoid if they are taught to avoid them and it’s something that always is the result of ND.   I have seen too many people pushed off to firing ranges that had very little training before they started doing defense shooting and dumb things like trigger control meant making an ass out of themselves by touching off a round while holstering.  The one statistic I will have to state is that with everyone of those it was with a Glock.

The differences between having a few extra pounds of trigger pull on a firearm can also reduce this, but if one  has trigger control it’s a none issue.  I have been using Blackhawk Serpa holsters for years now and they are still one of my favorites.  Yes they can fail if they roll in the dirt or snow but all firearms can fail for the same reason.  I have recently been using the Safariland holsters that many LEO have recommended and I understand the differences.  The reality for those that are carrying a firearm is this, if you want firearm retention with a holster, the Blackhawk Serpa holster is still  one of the best  holsters to protect and retain a firearm.
