Concealment and situational awarness

CCW VestOpen carry isn’t stopping Police Officers in Philadelphia from being shot at.  Wearing a blue uniform in that City and wearing body armor meant over 6 police officers being killed at more than double that being shot in the last 2yrs.    If you are that concerned about being “Made” with a firearm, carry a different gun.   Pocket and ankle carry are suitiable for white color environments and I don’t know any BG that wants 5 or 6 shots of 32acp-44 Special in their chest from a well trained law abiding gun owner.

The CCW Vest discussions usually go like this, if you look like you are carrying a gun you’re an easy target.   Well, if you look like you don’t have a gun, you’re also an easy target.    If you are open carrying the debate is radically changed.   Open Carry is legal in most States, but I along with many others would highly recommend against it in urban environments.   Every gun owner should be in the mindset that they have 1 up on a BG.   Cover your firearm and pay attention to  your surroundings, that’s probable the best advice I would give anyone that carrys a gun.

After a day of practice

Hoppes BoresnakeOne of the things that many gun collectors experience is what its like to take their collection to the range for a day and then shoot, then having to come home and clean everything.   I remember the times I’ve attending State or regional events and took more than a few handguns or rifles.  Some people like to take their time cleaing up their firearms and might let them sit for a few weeks before they get to them.   Some people practically break their guns down and clean them before they get cold.

After taking a few new shooters to the range today,  I didn’t worry about how much time I’d spend when I got home.   The Hoppes Boresnake is a breeze to clean with.   I tend to clean the barrels of all of the rifles I shoot immediately after I get home and cleaning a 22LR bolt action or semi-auto can be done in no more than 10 minutes.   I’d recommend using BreakFree CLP and a 22 Caliber Boresnake and you really won’t need more than 2 or 3 cleaning patches to clean the bolt.

Chip McCormick Pistol MagazinesFinding magazines that work in your 1911 shouldn’t be a project.   If you have been using the best magazines on the market, you are down to probable only 2 or 3 manufacturers.     The 1911 pistol design is a very durable design, but part of the problem we see in the gun is it can take a toll on the magazine slide stop tab and some manufacturers have remedied that.   Wilson Combat and McCormick are two that we see.    Chip McCormick  has known the competative shooting sport and knew since his companies inception that the guns were great, but the magazines on the market were all based on the chinsy, slimsy throw away design the military used.

Chip McCormick magazines come in 6, 7, 8 and 10rd variants.   The Chip McCormick power mag is hands down one of the top tier 1911 magazines for durability and reliability.   For those that like the more traditional metal look over the plastic Wilson Combat magazine, this is your mag.   There are also various styles of McCormick pistol magazines.  Some will come with different magazine bases and some come flush fit.   You can decide which mag fits your style.

IDPA Vest or CCW Vest Option

CCW VestOne of our biggest selling apparel item is the Eotac Style 102 Vest.   This vest is very similiar to the Woolrich Elite vest, but they are outselling them 3 to 1 these days.   The only real difference we see is the lack of a pen pocket on the upper left pocket which means absolutely nothing to our customers.   These have very low below the belt line and are  a great OWB or Paddle holster CCW vest.  You will easily be able to conceal a full size auto with one of these.   The Style 102 vest is made of 100% cotton ripstop and is a very, very lightweight concealment garment.

The front pockets are primarily for storing gear.   We have had a few customers misinterpret the use of the vest as a firearm retention device, but we strongly recommend against trying to hide a gun in the front pockets.   This material is lightweight and you will most likely print your firearm if carrying in that manor.   If you are taking a defensive class and looking for a concealment garment, this is an excellent CCW Vest.   Khaki is by far the most popular color and the sage is a very mild and casual color that goes well with tan or khaki pants.

Speed up the process

Hoppes BoresnakeBoresnakes have been around for a long time, but it still amazes me at the number of people that aren’t aware of them.   The notion of needing a long rod to clean your rifle bore is so out dated.   I guess it’s mostly the guys that operate the AR15 type of firearms that really pay attention to how much time it takes to clean a rifle that they are the ones that don’t want to go through the hassle.   The only way around not needing to clean an AR15 so much is to swap your upper out for a pistol version.

Hoppes boresnakes are easy to store and use.  All you do is drop the metal end down the chamber and putt it out of the barrel at the other end.   If you clean a lot, you will want to wash your boresnake, but you don’t have the mess of cleaning patches that cleaning rods create.   The Hoppes Boresnake will brush and swab your barrel in seconds.   You may want to soak the chamber or barrel with cleaning solvent before you drop the boresnake in, especially if you are cleaning for accuracy.

Is a rifle an overkill for home defense?

AR15 UpperIf you are new to learning about defending yourself with a firearm, let me answer that question and save you from having to do any research.   The answer that you will come to if you choose not to read further and decide to research on your own is NO!   Using something as lethal as an Ar15 inside your home makes more sense than using any caliber handgun.

Sometimes when people think about defending themselves inside their home, the first thing that pops into their head is a revolver or some sort of handgun.   I still don’t understand that microscopic attitude towards defending oneself, but it is very common.    The real value of using a small M4 type firearm inside your home as the ability to weild it more effectively.  Give the least trained gun owner you know and give them an M4 and tell them to take out a target at 9 ft vs giving them a Glock.  If you’ve got a target model AR15, try swapping the AR15 Upper for an A2 style variant.

Shooting Ranges outside of Philadelphia

Pennsylvania Shooting RangesLanghorne rod and gun club is one of the best run gun clubs in Pennsyvlania.    As of now there is no member cap although I wouldn’t be surprised that at some point there might be one.    They have a well maintained rifle range that is called the Big Bore range.   You can shoot any semi-auto up to but not including a 50bmg.   There are several competitive shooting groups here from Action Pistol to the Practical Carbine group.

One thing to be careful about when walking the 100-200yd rifle range is the snakes.   The club even has a sign up that warns of the the snakes in the area.  Kinda funny to see something like that at a range, but it might be good for checking your situational awareness.   There are trap ranges that are open for only a few bucks for each match and the new club house makes spending the day even nicer and more accomodating.  Find out about Pennsylvania Shooting Ranges like this one over at TheRallyPoint.org

Standard A2 to CQB

AR15 UpperI strongly recommend starting new shooters out on some sort of 22LR bolt action rifle.   It doesn’t matter if it is magazines fed or a single shot.  Learning the basic shooting skills of aim, hold, sqeeze and learning how to hit the X at 100yds is important.   If you are dealing with a young adult, one of the most fun things you can teach them on is a standard A2 AR15 and show them how to use the sighting system and the sighting system.

The Standard A2 Target models are probable the best instroductory semi-auto.   If you are firearm instructor or a Dad that has young sons to teach, that’s your best option, but if you want to have another firearm ready for home defense, we highly recommend picking up an M4 style AR15 Upper carbine and putting a white light on it.   You can keep one configuration for target shooting and training and another for close quarters situations.    The AR15 has quickly become a favorite amongst serious gun owners especially due to the ease and balance of the weapons firing controls.

Trying to find a range in Texas

Texas Shooting RangesEveryone has there own particular styles of shooting and interestes.   Some shooting ranges are specifically for hunting, some are for sporting clays or shooting trap, and some ranges are for long range target shooting.   One of my favorite shooting ranges is a 100yd range.   A good range will be designed for easy communication between shooters.   It always bothers me when people get too anal about calling cease fires and target changes.    If a range is setup right, a shooter should be able to setup their targets and not need to change them for hourse or atlease hundreds of rounds of ammo.

Pistol ranges are easier to setup than rifle ranges.  Pistol ranges normally are no longer than 50yds long and usually have wires for sending targets downrange.   Last year I was at a range near Dallas that was really nice.   I shot IDPA there and the range was clean and controlled.   Find a range that fits your shooting needs over at TRP.org under the Texas Shooting Ranges listing.

Upgrades and modifications

AR15 UpperAR15s are as accessorable as legos.   You can add on everyone accessory you can possible think of to an AR.   There have a been a few funny spoof photos of people putting can openers and headlights on their guns, but it’s not far from the truth.    There are reasons to have rails on various parts of a firearm, but most people won’t need anything more than a mount for optics, foregrip and a flashlight.   Military applications open a whole new can of worms.

You can take a standard AR15 lower and snap out and snap in an M4 AR15  Upper or swap it out for a longer range 20 inch barrel A2.   There are now a few caliber changes you can make with just pushing two pins out and snapping on a new upper.   Ever since the ammo price increases, the 5.45×39 upper made from Smith and Wesson has gained enormous ground within the shooting community.   You can get your money back after putting 2 or 3 thousand rounds through your gun and compare that to 5.56 prices which might cost close to what an upper costs you per thousand rounds.
