Tactical gear and clothing

There are a lot of words that get thrown around in the firearm industry that are fairly broad.    Tactical clothing these days may sound like BDUs to one person and 5.11 tactical clothing to another.    Tactical gear can mean anything from a folding stock to a knife, or a $1500 rifle scope.    The word “tactical” doesn’t really tell you what something is going to be used for in the field.    I have some pretty dressed down AR15 rifles that to some people, just look like violent weapons and scare them, while most of us that are familiar with the accessorized M4 Carbine, will find a A2 style AR15 to be  pretty bland.

The so called tactical clothing and concealed carry markets seem to be new markets and these terms get thrown around a lot but don’t really tell us much.  To the trained individual, they can spot a knife in the pocket and 5.11 style pants from a mile away and loads of pockets full of tactical gear and usually that’s a dead giveaway that someone is carrying a firearm.   Think about what purpose your clothing is to serve and adapt to it.   There are more than a few good clothing companies that are making concealed carry friendly apparel.

Marlin 925 range report

rifle casesWhen getting asked the question how many guns we own, the question should be asked “what do I not own?”   After several  years of dealing with the high speed, low drag weapon systems, and after watching the 2008 election results, there was huge jumps in ammo prices.    I thought to myself when 5.56 ammo was hitting close to the $700 per 1000rds range, that maybe ammo was going to be worth more than gold soon.   After putting a little thought into why the ammo prices were going up, I pretty much guessed that they won’t stay up that long in a bad economy, because nobody in their right mind would spend money on something that was 200-300% over  inflated.   I decided that if It was reloaded ammo, I wasn’t going to touch any factory ammo, and it was now time for a 22lr bolt action rifle.
I picked up a Marlin 925 bolt action rifle with iron sights and I was planning on not ever putting a scope on this.   As a firearms instructor, this was a basic platform for teaching basic shooting skills.   There is nothing wrong with teaching to shoot firearms to new shooters with a scope, but in my opinion iron sights are a better starting point.    This Marlin 925 was extremely accurate, but I  noticed that my groups were always left of center.   I looked at the rear sight adjustment and noticed I really couldn’t accomadate for the windage.   I was a little depressed and packed up my Marlin in a one of the rifle cases I had with me.  As a kid, I always compensated for a guns accuracy flaw by aiming at a different point, but as somoene who’s been able to hit the X at 600yds with other firearms, this off center accuracy really bothered me.   I’m looking to put another adjusteable rear sight on this or possible put a scope on this and pick up another bolt action that has better sights.

Gun cases for pistols

gun casesMost of us alreayd know that when we buy a new gun we usually get some sort of factory gun case.   These gun cases are nice for transporting the gun it is intended for and possible can hold a few magazines.   I’ve got a pile of them in my storage room, but I never use them for range trips.    I own a few range bags since I tend to actually use them for more than just packing up guns.   After having several experiences with forgeting to bring ammo, magazines, targets or staplers, I’ve learned to pack up my stuff and leave it in a bag that always comes to the range with me.

Pistol gun cases that come from the factory don’t have room for targets or ammo, and something like the Uncle Mike’s deluxe range bag can be had for under $50.   A few of my range bags can hold approximately 4 handguns and the middle compartments hold ammo, stamplers or targets.   I always put the guns away when I’m done with them, but many times I keep the ammo there.  I realize that if you have optics on any of your handguns you may not want to put so much heavy stuff in one bag, because even though there is padding between the guns, it still is considered a soft case transport.

Don’t Forget the Hunting Accessories

gun case

For a successful hunting trip, it’s imperative that you have all the necessary hunting gear. If you’re spending multiple days on your particular trip, the most important items are the proper clothing, your gun, and all your camping gear, which can include sleeping bag, tent, and camping cookware. But once all these basics are covered, there is an entire world of hunting extras and secondary accessories that will serve to make your trip more successful and more pleasant.

To that end, there is a huge variety of rifle accessories on the market. One of the most useful accessories is a tactical gun case. These padded cases will help ensure that your gun is safely packed for travel and storing. There are also a number of flashlight mounts, which attach directly to the rifle and allow you to place a light on the gun itself. Increasing your visibility at night or in other low light situations, this accessory can actually improve your chance at landing that big score.

Holographic gun sights

EotechModern combat optics are becoming more and more advanced.   Back in the day people just used the European pole or standard crosshairs for rifle scopes, but not anymore.   These days combat optics may be red dots, green dots, illuminated reticles, bullet drop compensators etched in glass or Mil-dots.   Combat optics like IOR scopes may have a reticle that is almost a sizing guide for range estimation where you just simply hold the target into a range estimator and then make adjustements on your target knobs or just  hold over.
There is also something completely unique.    Eotech holographic gun sights.  These unique combat optics have a holographic gun sight that, once sighted in, will stay sighted in no matter how you view through your sight.   According to many of those that we have spoken to in Iraq and Afghanistan, these are hands down the best CQB gun sight.  With zero magnifation,  you have the FOV that is unmatched by normal rifle scopes, and with that, comes faster target acquisition.    The unique holographic gun sight looks like something that was used in aircraft gun sights.   There are also options that can  be used for some level of magnification so that identifying targets at greater distances can be done without compromising the close up speed that these optics give you.

Training and preparedness

Tactical gun casesTactical gun cases are rarely used to their fullest.  After witnessing a lot of shooting events, I’d have to say that disorganization seems to be pretty common amongst most gun owners.  I’ve seen guys show up  with wrong magazines, no backup batteries, no screw drivers, no tools for fixing scopes and countless other goofy stuff.   There have been a few times where I was impressed at how well guys or gals organized there gear in one range bag.

The truth of the matter is only you know what your firearm needs to keep it up and running and what to repair it with, I’m not talking about stockpiling tons of ammo and tools boxes in  your rifle case, but you really should check out some of the tactical rifle cases that are out there.   Uncle Mikes, Bulldog and tacforce all make tactical cases, but their other other usefull pockets other than the standard 30rd magazine pockets.   If you’re going to pick up a gun case, you really should think about marking it with something so you know which gun is in there.   Keep a small multi purpose screw driver in there, allen keys, maybe something to carry batteries for your flashlight or Eotech optics, and you may seriously think about keeping your sight in tools there.  There are various types of tactical rifles cases, some are much close to sniper drag bags than something you can carry like a briefcase, but it may save you some headaches if you are always prepared.
